TASMANIAN DEVIL UNZOO – A WORLD FIRST
The world has many great zoos and wildlife parks. Tasmanian Devil Unzoo represents a reversal of the concept and ethos of these institutions.
Tasmanian Devil Unzoo is the world’s first intentional Unzoo project, developed from a masterplan created by visionary zoo designer John Coe and Tasmanian Devil Unzoo owner John Hamilton. The evolution of our Uzoo has taken place over 35 years—and we’re not finished yet!
In transforming our site, we have embraced natural habitats for our native animals that replicate or restore natural landscapes. The Unzoo is much more than the appearance of no cages or barriers. Our habitats create an environment in which our animals have more independence, behaviour choices and opportunities for natural behaviours, and we’ve replaced old zoo animal management methods with safer and more humane reward-based training, resulting in more active, stimulated and content animals.
Central to the Unzoo experience is encouraging wild animals to interact with our Unzoo environment, enabling visitors to observe wild animal behaviour without the need to capture wildlife. Here, you’ll observe wild possums and birds via our nesting box cameras, hand-feed free-ranging wallabies and wild parrots, and encounter wild native animals—from echidnas to wombats to the native fish in our stream—as you explore our Unzoo environment.
We invite you to join us, and experience our unique Unzoo concept first hand.
